Our Vision

AV Vocal Studio has grown and transformed over the years, serving nearly 1,000 students across three continents. Our students can be found performing on Broadway and Off-Broadway stages, National Tours, top college and university musical theatre programs, professional stages, community theaters, and high schools across the country. Our students are kind, motivated, skilled, and spreading their love of storytelling both on and off the stage.

Our teachers are highly educated, experienced, and ready to serve YOU! Whether you are navigating musical theatre degree programs, the professional performing world, or just want to improve your skills, we are here to help.

It’s easy to get lost in the weeds of questions: ❓How do they want me to sound? ❓What kind of movement are they expecting? ❓Who do they want me to emulate? Respectfully, I think those questions are a waste of your time as an artist! It takes the heart out of what you’re doing. The reason art is meaningful is because it’s uniquely human - uniquely YOU! Ask these questions instead: ✨What makes me sound unique? ✨What’s an experience that I can draw upon that opens a window to my heart? ✨How can I bring a piece of myself to this work? To find vocal balance, we must first identify the tendency preventing us from balance and then do exercises to counteract that tendency! ✨We are listening for the relationship between: 1️⃣Respiration (breath) 2️⃣Phonation (how the vocal folds come together) 3️⃣Resonation (shape of the vocal tract) Every voice needs something different. This particular 8th grader just needed to strengthen his chest voice! You can be chest dominant, head dominant, mix belting, or somewhere in between. The point is, do what is right for your voice and the song! I love my students like they are my own kids and I am so grateful to journey with them through their high school years as they grow into their voices and step into their light. I used to get SO frustrated trying to get rid of tension in my body while singing! 😩 I would do the weirdest things to try and get rid of it but I would just end up with more tension than I started with. It wasn’t until I started finding true vocal balance that I was able to alleviate a world of tension in my body. 🙌 The tension is trying to tell you something. It’s not the problem - it’s pointing TO the problem. Listen for the imbalances: is the voice too breathy or too squeezy sounding?
